The Architecture of Sound — Rich Medina + Dante’s Hi-Fi+
Rich Medina’s journey of building community through music.
Film by Violetta Markelou

Every time I stepped into Dante’s Hi-Fi+, I felt connected. Rooted in something. The diversity, the music, and the energy reminded me of DC, far removed from the flash so often associated with Miami. I kept wondering: Who was responsible for this incredible vibe?
The idea for this film stayed with me for more than two years before my first meeting with legendary DJ Rich Medina.
The Architecture of Sound — Rich Medina + Dante’s Hi-Fi+ is an intimate documentary portrait tracing Rich’s journey of building community through music, education, and the preservation of Black culture. From his transformative performances to his role in creating Miami’s first analog-only vinyl listening bar, the film explores the care and intention behind his work—and how his thoughtful selections and deep understanding of sound bring a room to life.

As a photographer and former professional DJ, I understand the work and care that go into presenting music—the intention behind each selection, the desire to broaden someone’s worldview, and the possibility of opening them up to an emotion they weren’t expecting. That experience drew me to the person behind the feeling I kept finding at Dante’s. As a health professional, I also wanted to explore something close to my heart: how community and the arts contribute to our collective health and overall well-being.
Through documenting Dante’s and spending time with Rich, I explored the power of music to help us feel, connect, and be present. The film offers a different perspective on Miami’s nightlife, revealing a space that answers a growing hunger for authenticity, nostalgia, and human connection.

The film is now edited, and we’re putting on the finishing touches. These photographs—from my time documenting Dante’s to moments behind the scenes—offer a glimpse into that journey.
